Want to be a real life super hero? Follow these 7 steps!

Attention science stream students! You can be a super hero.

Every day there are thousands of heroes, all over the world, keeping families together, giving children futures and providing hope to the masses.

Doctors hold the most noble and prestigious career in the entire world for generations and will always be the most important pillars of a healthy and functioning society.

Step 1: Initiation

Here is where the individual decides to sacrifice their time and effort for the better of others. This is the stage where most of your parents will try to explain the importance of this career choice. Choosing a science group in your 11th and 12th grade is the only way to start off on this journey. Do well, keep your grades and spirits up and you should be well on your way to the next step.

Step 2: The entrance

You and other aspirants will have to write the NEET exam which is a compulsion for students throughout India.

This phase might seem difficult but if you start preparing well in advance, as early as 11th grade, you will find it easy to breeze through this stage. There are several institutions that provide professional coaching and training for competitive and entrance exams such as TIME Institute, Triumphant Institute of Management Education. They have branches across Tamil Nadu and other states as well.

Professional training institutes like TIME help make your preparation easier and give you more confidence. With proper guidance and counselling you will have an edge over others.

Step 3: Selecting your portal – A good medical college

There are so many colleges offering medical courses but not all of them are well reputed and not all of them have the best standards. So be on the look-out for only the very best and aim for the most well-known colleges.

Here are a list of the top Institutes in TN (please do check them out when you're done reading all 7 steps)

Professional considerations for selecting a college:
  1. Rank of the college in India
  2. Availability of equipment
  3. Patient inflow
  4. Faculty
  5. Location

Step 4: Your Training – Compulsory Internship

Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire skills under supervision so that he/she may become capable of functioning independently.

An Intern (also called an Internee or a CRRI) is posted in all the clinical departments of the hospital on a rotation basis. This gives him the basic clinical experience in all the disciplines of medicine and enables him to work as a General Physician.

At the end of the internship training, you will be able to diagnose clinical common disease conditions encountered in practice and make timely decisions, use discreetly the essential drugs, infusions, blood or its substitutes and laboratory services. You will be able to manage all type of emergencies-medical, surgical obstetric, neonatal and paediatric, by rendering first level care and much more.

Step 5: Specialisation – Your super power

You can decide to take your adventure further and specialise in another medical degree as well.
This is where you choose your strength and main focus of interest. Perhaps you are a cardiologist at heart or you prefer being an orthopaedic…maybe you have a knack for treating children. Whatever it may be, the choice is yours so choose wisely.

Step 6 : Research and Practice

At this stage you will be practising medicine in your chosen field. You will have to spend time reading up on journals, case studies and discussing issues of your profession with your peers. Keep in mind that the medical field requires constant research.

Finding out about how doctors around the world have dealt with different rare issues can really help you understand a lot more about the field. You will have to put in time and effort to stay up to date.

Step 7: Service to society

Yes, doctors get paid in HUGE amounts when they go down the right path. Yes, they can easily find work globally and can immigrate to many countries like the USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia and so on without much of a hassle. While it is the most rewarding and stable profession, it is also sacrificial and humbling. It is not for the faint at heart.

Most good doctors get paid well. But their goal isn’t just about making more and more money. A good doctor’s goal is to provide service and loyalty to society and fellow human beings. A doctor saves lives, the most precious thing on earth.
